Amy Coen's Video Blog from Ethiopia

In a small village, hours outside of Awassa, Ethiopia, a crowd numbering in the thousands is growing. The people—old and young, men and women, from over a dozen surrounding villages—have come to meet a local doctor who is changing the lives of young girls in a way they will never forget. Dr. Bogaletch Gebre—“Boge” as she’s affectionately called—is campaigning to end the all-too-common cultural practice of female genital mutilation (FGM). Her success is nothing short of miraculous. My colleagues and I were fortunate to meet this courageous woman and her “foot soldiers” and witness the countless girls, mothers, fathers, and village elders who came to this rally to demonstrate their commitment to end the painful and dangerous practice of FGM. I invite you to view pictures and listen to the sounds of the rally.
