Abstaining from Reality Premieres in British Parliament

Abstaining from Reality: U.S. Restrictions on HIV Prevention exposes the dangers of U.S. abstinence-only HIV prevention policies, told through first-hand accounts of the women and men affected by the epidemic in Kenya and Uganda. PAI, joined by two of the women featured in the film, Rosemarie Muganda Onyando, Director of the Centre for the Study of Adolescence, and Juliet Awuor, an HIV-positive woman from Kenya, toured the documentary throughout Europe last month. Next month, the tour comes to the U.S. with a May 15th screening on Capitol Hill.

PAI Captivates UN Audience with The Shape of Things to Come

On April 11, PAI released its new report, The Shape of Things to Come: Why Age Structure Matters to a Safer, More Equitable World, at a luncheon supported by the delegation of the Netherlands during the UN Commission on Population and Development. The report provides valuable new insights into the programs and investments that can make countries "healthier" -- more peaceful, more democratic, and better able to provide for the needs of their people. In particular, youth are a tremendous asset for any society, especially if they are educated, healthy and living in a safe and equitable world. This report shows why investments in programs that respond to their needs are so important.

Three New Bills Show Congressional Support for International Family Planning

The new Democratic Congress is showing a strong commitment to strengthening U.S. funding and support for international family planning and reproductive health programs. Three important new pieces of legislation have already been introduced in Congress -- the Prevention Against Transmission of HIV for Women and Youth (PATHWAY) Act, the Global Democracy Promotion Act and the Focus on Family Health Worldwide Act of 2007 -- and we encourage our readers to contact their representatives and urge them to support these crucial pieces of legislation.

PAI Receives 2007 Mildred Robbins Leet Award for the Advancement of Women

PAI has been chosen as a recipient of the 2007 Mildred Robbins Leet Award for the Advancement of Women. The award, given by Interaction's Commission on the Advancement of Women, is designed to honor "breakthroughs in women's empowerment and gender equality in the context of alleviating poverty and/or effective development." PAI is being recognized for demonstrating exceptional leadership in linking reproductive health services and environmental concerns through community-based population and environment work.
