Carlo De Benedetti

Carlo de Benedetti is the founder and CEO of CIR, one of the largest holding companies in Italy, as well as founder and CEO of CBD WebTech, a company specializing in high-tech, biotechnology and nanotechnology investments and funds. He serves as head of the Rodolfo De Benedetti Foundation, an organization that studies the problems connected with welfare reform and that Carlo established in 1980 memory of his father.

He began his career with his family’s company, Compagnia Italiana Tubi Metallici Flessibili, later renamed Gilardini, and was Chairman and CEO from 1976 until 1983. From that point until 1996, he was Chairman and CEO of Olivetti, and remained honorary Chairman until 1999.

Carlo is currently a member of the International Council of the Center for Strategic & International Studies, the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Science, and the Italian Council of the European Institute of Business Administration. He has previously been a member of the European Roundtable of Industrialists, for which he was Vice Chairman until 2004, and of the European Avisory Committee of the New York Stock Exchange. He was awarded the title of Cavaliere del Lavoro in 1983, the French Legion d’Honneur in 1987, the Silver Medal for Merit from Austria in 2006, and holds an honorary law degree from Wesleyan University. He was educated at Turin Polytechnic and holds a degree in electrical engineering.
